Advice Column — Minimizing Morning Madness

How to Have a Productive Morning

Every day, as the sun rises, students across Atlanta slowly wake from their slumbers and begin preparing for their day. While for most, getting ready for school can be a relatively mundane routine, it can be especially difficult for students to get ready. Whether they are running late, sleeping in, or feeling groggy for the first three hours of the day, the morning can cause a lot of chaos for students. However, it does not have to be that way. It is possible to improve.

The most common advice people usually give is, “Get enough sleep the night before.” However, for high school students struggling with multiple AP classes, sports, and a plethora of extracurriculars, a solid night’s sleep can feel almost impossible to achieve. But have no fear, there are other ways to feel more refreshed and prepared in the morning.

Starting the day off can be hard, but there are ways to make it better.

Firstly, plan as much as possible the night before. This can manifest itself as preparing lunch the day before, packing your school bag, or making a to-do list of morning tasks to cross off. This helps create structure and organization around what could be a hectic part of one’s day.

Secondly, get out of bed as soon as the alarm goes off. It is extremely tantalizing to snooze as much as possible and furrow deeper into the warm blankets, protecting yourself from the frigid external environment. Yet, doing so disturbs one’s sleep cycle and ends up causing less rest in the long run. Instead, find ways to jump out of bed and break sleep’s hold as quickly as possible. Maybe turn on a light, open the blinds, or play loud music.

Furthermore, make sure to eat or drink something. Even just a glass of water could be the difference between a sluggish drive to school and an enthusiastic start to the morning. Some healthy and energizing foods include oatmeal, a protein bar, or fruit.

Lastly, the drive to school can be boring. Without the right incentive, it can be easy to fall right back into the fatigue of the morning. However, a peppy music playlist or a stimulating conversation could be just the thing to keep the drive from becoming dull. This can ensure that the day continues on a bright note.

Overall, starting the day off can be hard, but there are ways to make it better. Hopefully, these tips can help rejuvenate school mornings.
