A beautiful gold one? Your sibling\u2019s or child\u2019s hand-sculpted mud-brick menorah? Believe it or not, halacha discusses what kind of menorah is best to use and what kind of menorah you should definitely not use. Let&#8217;s take a look!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chapter 139 in the Kitzur Shulchan Aruch:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;\u05d0\u05b4\u05dd \u05de\u05b7\u05d3\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e7 \u05d1\u05b0\u05bc\u05e0\u05b5\u05e8 \u05e9\u05b6\u05dc \u05d7\u05b6\u05e8\u05b6\u05e1, \u05db\u05b5\u05bc\u05d9\u05d5\u05b8\u05df \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d4\u05b4\u05d3\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e7 \u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05dc\u05b7\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d0\u05b6\u05d7\u05b8\u05d3, \u05e0\u05b7\u05e2\u05b2\u05e9\u05b8\u05c2\u05d4 \u05d9\u05b8\u05e9\u05b8\u05c1\u05df, \u05d5\u05b0\u05d0\u05b5\u05d9\u05df \u05de\u05b7\u05d3\u05b0\u05dc\u05b4\u05d9\u05e7\u05b4\u05d9\u05df \u05d1\u05bc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05d1\u05b7\u05bc\u05dc\u05b7\u05bc\u05d9\u05b0\u05dc\u05b8\u05d4 \u05d4\u05b7\u05e9\u05b5\u05c1\u05e0\u05b4\u05d9, \u05de\u05b4\u05e9\u05bc\u05c1\u05d5\u05bc\u05dd \u05d3\u05b0\u05bc\u05de\u05b8\u05d0\u05b4\u05d9\u05e1. \u05d5\u05b0\u05e2\u05b7\u05dc \u05db\u05b5\u05bc\u05df \u05ea\u05b4\u05bc\u05d4\u05b0\u05d9\u05b6\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d5\u05b9 \u05de\u05b0\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e0\u05b8\u05d0\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05de\u05b4\u05d9\u05e0\u05b5\u05d9 \u05de\u05b7\u05ea\u05b6\u05bc\u05db\u05b6\u05ea. \u05d5\u05bc\u05de\u05b4\u05d9 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05d9\u05b8\u05d3\u05d5\u05b9 \u05de\u05b7\u05e9\u05b6\u05bc\u05c2\u05d2\u05b6\u05ea, \u05d9\u05b4\u05e7\u05b0\u05e0\u05b6\u05d4 \u05de\u05b0\u05e0\u05d5\u05b9\u05e8\u05b8\u05d4 \u05e9\u05b6\u05c1\u05dc \u05db\u05b6\u05bc\u05e1\u05b6\u05e3 \u05dc\u05b0\u05d4\u05b4\u05d3\u05bc\u05d5\u05bc\u05e8 \u05de\u05b4\u05e6\u05b0\u05d5\u05b8\u05d4.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cIf you light a menorah made of earthenware, after you light it one night it deteriorates and you should not light it again the following night, because it is repulsive. Therefore, you should possess a beautiful menorah made of metal. If you can afford it, you should buy a silver menorah, in order to adorn the mitzvah.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, according to the above <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em>, you should definitely not use a mud-brick menorah because it becomes \u201crepulsive\u201d after one use. Instead, you should get a metal menorah, preferably silver.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If this seems to you like very little to go off of when choosing a menorah, you&#8217;re not alone. The <em>Kaf HaChayim<\/em>, a commentary on the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em>, decided to grace us with some more detail to aid with our menorah shopping. He lists fifteen levels of menorah materials:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Kaf HaChayim <\/em>on <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em>, <em>Orach Chayim<\/em> 673:60:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;\u05d8&#8221;\u05d5 \u05de\u05d9\u05e0\u05d9 \u05db\u05dc\u05d9\u05dd \u05e8\u05d0\u05d5\u05d9\u05dd \u05dc\u05d4\u05d3\u05dc\u05e7\u05d4 \u05d5\u05db\u05dc \u05d4\u05e7\u05d5\u05d3\u05dd \u05e7\u05d5\u05d3\u05dd \u05de\u05d4\u05dd \u05de\u05e9\u05d5\u05d1\u05d7 \u05de\u05e9\u05d5\u05dd \u05d6\u05d4 \u05d0\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d5\u05d0\u05e0\u05d5\u05d4\u05d5, \u05d4\u05d0&#8217; \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d6\u05d4\u05d1, \u05d1&#8217; \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05db\u05e1\u05e3, \u05d2&#8217; \u05e0\u05d7\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05e7\u05dc\u05dc \u05d3\u05d5\u05de\u05d4 \u05dc\u05d6\u05d4\u05d1, \u05d3&#8217; \u05e0\u05d7\u05d5\u05e9\u05ea \u05d0\u05d3\u05d5\u05dd, \u05d4&#8217; \u05e9\u05dc \u05d1\u05e8\u05d6\u05dc, \u05d5&#8217; \u05d1\u05d3\u05d9\u05dc, \u05d6&#8217; \u05e2\u05d5\u05e4\u05e8\u05ea, \u05d7&#8217; \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d0\u05d1\u05e0\u05d9\u05dd, \u05d8&#8217; \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d6\u05db\u05d5\u05db\u05d9\u05ea, \u05d9&#8217; \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05e2\u05e6\u05d9\u05dd, \u05d9&#8221;\u05d0 \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d7\u05e8\u05e1 \u05de\u05e6\u05d5\u05e4\u05d4 \u05d1\u05d0\u05d1\u05e8, \u05d9&#8221;\u05d1 \u05db\u05dc\u05d9 \u05d7\u05e8\u05e1 \u05d1\u05dc\u05ea\u05d9 \u05de\u05e6\u05d5\u05e4\u05d4 \u05d5\u05e6\u05e8\u05d9\u05da \u05e9\u05d9\u05d4\u05d9\u05d4 \u05d7\u05d3\u05e9, \u05d9&#8221;\u05d2 \u05e7\u05dc\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea \u05e8\u05d9\u05de\u05d5\u05df, \u05d9&#8221;\u05d3 \u05e7\u05dc\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea \u05d0\u05d2\u05d5\u05d6 \u05d4\u05e0\u05d3\u05d9\u05d9, \u05d8&#8221;\u05d5 \u05e7\u05dc\u05d9\u05e4\u05d5\u05ea \u05d4\u05d0\u05dc\u05d5\u05df&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cThere are fifteen vessels fit for lighting the menorah, and the first ones listed are of higher quality:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Gold vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Silver vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copper which has a gold color vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Copper which has a red color vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Iron vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tin vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Lead vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Glass vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wood which has been made into a vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Bone which has been made into a vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earthenware coated with lead<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Earthenware that is not coated<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pomegranate shell which has been made into a vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Wall nut shell which has been made into a vessel<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Acorn shells which has been made into a vessel\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Now we know that there&#8217;s more to menorah shopping than the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> let on. Silver is not the best material: gold is. The <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> simply suggested the more affordable option of the two. Beyond gold and silver, the <em>Kaf HaChayim<\/em> provides many different options to pick from. Who knew you could repurpose pomegranate shells from Rosh Hashanah into a menorah or that you could make one from gathered acorns? This Chanukah, take inspiration from the <em>Shulchan Aruch<\/em> and <em>Kaf HaChayim<\/em> to find your balance of beauty, price, and <em>Hidor HaMitzvah (<\/em>adorning the mitzvah).
